Otter Pond May 2007

Finally, a guys fly fishing trip early enough in the spring where the fish are still hungry. Probably the most productive fly fishing trip I've ever been on. My Dad, UB, Alan, Alex and Gramps hit the camp for a weekend of fly fishing, drinking and eating. Doesn't get much better...The pictures say it all here. We caught a nice selection of 10- 12" brookies and kept 1 shy of our limit. This was quite a feast on the ole camp fire later! The ultimate moment for me in my brief history of fly fishing came early on in the day. As we're positioning ourselves in the canoe, fish are jumping and everyone is getting excited...The whiskey cocktails may have added slightly to the excitement. I tie on a hendrickson and take a few casts. About 30ft in front of me I see a nice jump and luckily I had just retrieved my line. I quickly make the cast of a life time 25ft out hoping the fishing was headed in my direction. Sure enough this is one of those moments where the light is perfect and I can see into the pond. Better yet, I can see what looks to be a nice size brookie coming up on my dry fly. BAM! He hits and I set without hesitation. A nice fight all the way to the canoe to be scooped up by Alex with the net. This would prove triumphant to the pain suffered by Alex's miscast which later lodged a dry fly into my nose. I'd like to take a moment and thank the kind folks at the Greenville emergency room for quick work on correcting the matter. I'm pretty sure they get 3 or 4 visits a day like this. Alan rushed us back to the scene of the crime for a few more casts and some celebratory shots to cap off the day. Gramps was greeted back at camp with quite the feast and we cooked them to perfection.
